During the summer, I was trying to think of a name for my laptop and then I realized that Greek gods/goddesses would be a good choice. I like Greek mythology, and any name I picked would in some way imply power.
This leads me to discussion of the actual characteristics of my laptop. It is a Sony R505el Superslim. It has a docking station with a DVD/CD-RW drive and floppy drive. Without the docking station, the laptop only weighs 4.1 pounds. It has a 12" screen and a 1.13 ghz P3-M processor.
I've been trying to install linux on it so I can use it for my research work. However, this is a difficult task because Sony doesn't like to support linux at all and the BIOS on the R505 has a bug (partially Sony's fault, partially Intel's) that causes linux to load without enough memory allocated for video. So I've been recompiling the kernel and X for several days, using patches provided here. Haven't got it to work yet. This has led me to think maybe I should just stick with XP and save myself the trouble. We'll see.
9/6/02- NEWS! I have Linux working now! Yay! Read my page on explaining how I got Linux working if you're interested, or have a Sony laptop.
